World Cup celebs tweet SA’s praises

South Africa is gaining fans as celebrities are using social media sites like Twitter to talk about their love for our great country.

Celebs like Will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas), Alicia Keys, Akon and R Kelly all Tweated about South Africa and they promised to be come back. Will.i.am, of the music group Black Eyed Peas, posted pictures of himself and singer Alicia Keys celebrating South Africa’s first goal at the opening match, and enthused: “20 years ago no one would have never (sic) thought the whole world would come to south africa for world cup…this is historic”.

They were among the litany of celebrities who visited South Africa for the tournament, including British Princes William and Harry, hip-hop artist K’Naan, rapper R Kelly, Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones fame and former supermodel Kimora Lee Simmons.

The model gushed to her fans about the Cape Town, posting pictures of the landmark Table Mountain from her room.

On her departure, Kimora promised to come back and stay longer.

“I am very sad 2 b leaving the gorgeous S.Africa! Thank u 2 all 4 ur luv and kindness! We’ll b back very, very soon! Team Fabulosity SA rocks,” she said.

Singer Akon declared his love for the country and the continent by posting mini-videos shot at different locations around South Africa.

“South Africa rocks, this is the place to be,” the star said on Twitter.

“Thank You S. Africa!!,” said R Kelly on his departure.

The distinctly South African vuvuzela, the noisy plastic horn which has become a signature sound at World Cup matches, has become a trending topic on Twitter.

Even world football president Sepp Blatter has a Twitter account where he enthuses about the games and the organisation of the event.

I think this is awesome that the word of mouth marketing of social media is improving the image of Mzansi.

The world’s most expensive armchair sold for R240 million

PD*26739370

The world’s most expensive armchair were sold for about R240 million. I bet a Lazyboy is much more comfortable and at a small fraction of the price.

A small brown leather armchair once owned by Yves Saint Laurent has reportedly sold for £19.4 million (about R240 million), making it the most expensive piece of 20th-century design to ever be auctioned.

The armchair, by Irish designer Eileen Gray was only expected to reach around £3 million at Christie’s in Paris. It was bought by specialist Paris art gallery Robert and Cheska Vallois.

The unique piece – known as the “dragons’ armchair because of the ornate sculptures on its sweeping armrests – was created between 1917 and 1919 by Miss Gray.

She moved to London in 1898 to study at the Slade School of Fine Art and she became renowned for the luxurious finish of her lacquered furniture.

For Sale -Spend your eternal days above Marilyn

00d/13/koal/14505/29

An American widow is selling her husband’s burial spot directly above film legend Marilyn Monroe so that she can pay off her mortgage.

Elsie Poncher has put an advert on eBay to auction off the tomb in Westwood Village Memorial Park, Los Angeles.

“Here is a once in a lifetime and into eternity opportunity to spend your eternal days directly above Marilyn Monroe,” says the advertisement.

“In fact the person occupying the address right now is looking face down on her.”

The burial plot is currently occupied by the late Richard Poncher, described by his widow as an entrepreneur who bought two tombs from baseball player Joe DiMaggio, Monroe’s ex-husband, as the pair were divorcing in 1954.

Monroe died at the age of 36 in 1962. Poncher died at the age of 81 in 1986.

Bidding for the plot

Elsie Poncher said she would move her husband’s remains over one spot into a crypt intended as her final resting place if the sale was successful and she would be cremated instead when the time came.

Bidding for the plot opened at $500 000 and had reached $2.5m by Sunday. No one from eBay was immediately available to comment on the bidding process or to give more details.

Poncher told the Los Angeles Times that she hoped to raise enough money to pay off the $1.6m mortgage on her Beverly Hills home.

“I can’t be more honest than that,” she told the newspaper. “I want to leave it free and clear for my kids.”

The Westwood Village Memorial Park is home to many celebrities, including Dean Martin, James Coburn, Roy Orbison, Truman Capote, Natalie Wood, and, from this year, Farrah Fawcett. Playboy’s Hugh Hefner bought the crypt beside Monroe in 1992.

Prince Charles converts sports car to run on wine

prince-charles

Prince Charles has converted his vintage Aston Martin car, given to him on his 21st birthday by Queen Elizabeth II, to run on English wine, a spokesperson said.

The move, part of the prince’s green drive to reduce by 12.5% his carbon footprint up to 2012, was announced in a recent report released on the royal’s activities. And according to the report, the prince, an keen advocate of the environment, has already reduced his carbon emissions by 18%.

Sir Michael Peat, the prince’s chief aide, called the conversion a “symbolic role” saying: “Charles only travelled two or three hundred miles a year in the Aston but he wanted it to be environmentally friendly. It just happened that our bioethanol supplier makes the fuel from surplus English wine.”

The classic 1970 Aston Martin Volante convertible is usually only driven in the summer, having an annual mileage of around 300 miles (480 km).

The prince’s other cars, including Jaguars, Audis and Range Rovers, are entirely powered by cooking oil.

The annual report on the Prince of Wales said: “When their Royal Highnesses are travelling in the UK the aim is to reduce emissions through greater use of cars, trains, and turbo-prop aircraft. In accepting and arranging engagements more consideration is being given to reducing travel distances.”

The prince’s carbon emissions do not include the highly criticized Royal Air Force flights taken by his son Prince William at the British taxpayers’ expense. According to The Guardian newspaper, William flew a military helicopter to his girlfriend’s home, his father’s house, as well as to a stag party in southern England.

The Ministry of Defense said all flights were part of the prince’s training, while admitting that there may have been an element of “naivety” in their planning.

Some Of the Best Oscar Speeches

tomhanks-100

When reflecting back on the Oscars,  it’s some of the incredible speeches that come to mind. And here are some favourites :

Meryl Streep was extremely gracious when accepting her Best Actress award for Sophie’s Choice in 1981 … “I have a lot of people to thank and I’m going to be one of those people that tries to mention a lot of names, because I know just two seconds ago my mother and father went berserk and I’d like to give some other mothers and fathers that same opportunity.

Juliette Binoche was also extremely gracious when she was clearly in shock at her upset win over favourite Lauren Bacall by saying “I’m so surprised! It’s true, I didn’t prepare anything. I thought Lauren was going to get it, and I think she deserves it.”

Mickey Rooney expressed one of the unspoken truths about some people’s stardom, that it can disappear as quickly as it arrives. When he accepted an honorary Oscar in 1982, he said “When I was 19 years old, I was the number one star of the world for two years; when I was 40, nobody wanted me — I couldn’t get a job.”

One of the most touching moments in Oscar history came in the 1977 ceremony, when true sentiment was expressed on the Oscar stage, something we don’t often see coming out of Hollywood. William Holden was out presenting with his dear friend and former co-star Barbara Stanwyck , and he delivered a heartfelt tribute to her, which she had not been expected, and she was visibly moved by it.

He said “Before Barbara and I present this next award, I’d like to say something. 39 years ago this month, we were working on a film together called “Golden Boy”, and it wasn’t going too well because I was going to be replaced. But due to this lovely human being and her interest and understanding, and her professional integrity, and her encouragement, and above all her generosity, I am here tonight.”

All kinds of other acceptance speeches have been extremely moving, including:

Steven Spielberg’s touching tribute to his mother and to the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust when he accepted his Best Director Oscar for Schindler’s List in 1993.

Al Pacino’s Best Actor acceptance speech in 1992, encouraging youngsters to go for their dream.

Louise Fletcher signing for her deaf parents when winning Best Actress in 1975 for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Whoopi Golderg’s recent tribute to film critic Gene Siskel, who had recently passed away before the 1998 ceremony.

Dustin Hoffman explaining his past criticism of the Academy when winning Best Actor for 1979′s Kramer vs. Kramer.

But one of the most memerable speeches was Tom Hanks accepting his first Best Actor prize, for Philadelphia, in 1993. His speech represented the voices silenced by AIDS, which was the main topic of the film he won the Oscar for, and as delivered by Hanks, still remains for one of the most moving acceptance speeches in Oscar history.

Here 1s that memorable speech : “I know that my work in this case is magnified by the fact that the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. We know their names. They number a thousand for each one of the red ribbons that we wear here tonight. They finally rest in the warm embrace of the gracious creator of us all, a healing embrace that cools their fevers, that clears their skin, and allows their eyes to see the simple, self-evident commonsense truth that is made manifest by the benevolent creator of us all.”

” Iwant to thank…everybody I ever met in my entire life” Maureen Stapleton in 1982

Dianne Wiest in 1987: “Gee, this isn’t like I imagined it would be in the bathtub.”

Robin Williams in 1998: “Most of all, I want to thank my father, up there, the man who when I said I wanted to be an actor, he said, ‘Wonderful, just have a back-up profession like welding.’”

Short documentary winner Jessica Yu saying: “What a thrill. You know you’ve entered new territory when you realize that your outfit cost more than your film.”

Gwyneth’s cringeworthy acceptance speech in 2003, out-bawling Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman.

Tom Hanks accidentally outing his high school teacher in his Philadelphia speech in 1994.

Marlon Brando protesting about American behaviour by sending a Native American to collect his award in 1973. She was later revealed to be an aspiring actress.

“I am the king of the world” shrieks James Cameron moments after ordering a minute’s silence for the Titanic victims.

Jack Palance doing one-armed pushups when accepting his Oscar for City Slickers in 1991, to prove he could keep up with the young actors of today.

Cuba Gooding Jr in 1997: “Tom Cruise! I love you, brother! I love you, man!…Everybody, I love you. I love you all. Cameron Crowe! James L. Brooks! James L. Brooks, I love you. Everybody who’s involved with this, I love you. I love you. Everybody involved.”
